February 2006

OK, Smoke Risers, put away your excuses – DeKalb County has expanded its recycling program. Now, it’s easier than ever to keep our community environmentally friendly. So, let’s see how many blue recycling bags and boxes we can place at the curbs on Wednesday mornings.

The county subscription service now includes more materials, and less sorting. Subscribers can place all grades of paper in special blue bins provided by the County. (That means no more unsightly piles of newspapers, phone books, magazines, office paper, cardboard, and junk mail!) All other recyclable items can be mixed together in a special blue bag, including; unbroken glass, plastic containers with recycle symbols 1 – 7, and all steel, tin and aluminum cans.

There are some exceptions, but DeKalb’s recycling program accepts more recyclables than most recycle centers or programs.

Here’s even more of an incentive: The $25 annual collection service fee has been dropped! If you’re one of the “environmental pioneers” who already signed up and paid a $25 service fee, you will receive a credit from the Sanitation Division that can be applied towards future purchases of plastic bags.

The residential recycling program now costs $30 to subscribe for weekly service (A one-time fee of $15 for the plastic bin, plus $15 for a box of 100 plastic bags – which should last approximately two years). Curbside collections take place every Wednesday, except for Thanksgiving and Christmas Weeks.

There are many long-term benefits of recycling for us taxpayers – including a longer life for our landfill. So, sign up, and let’s line the streets in blue!

To join DeKalb County’s Curbside Recycling Program, please fill out an application available at the link below. Send it along with your $30 check made payable to DeKalb County to:  DeKalb County Sanitation, Recycling Coordinator, 3643 Camp Circle, Building B, Decatur, GA 30032.

The 2006 collection schedule and recycling program brochure should be in your mailbox soon. The mailer will also include an application form.  You can also call (404) 294-2900 for more information or e-mail sanitation@co.dekalb.ga.us.
